1850 $20 AU53 NGC. The inaugural double eagle coinage at Philadelphia absorbed significant quantities of freshly mined California gold, although private San Francisco assayers still offered a faster and more convenient coining option for prospectors. Only in 1854, with the opening of the San Francisco branch mint, did private coinage enterprises in that region fade away. Examples of the 1850 Philadelphia issue are popular today as Gold Rush-era type coins. This AU piece displays lightly abraded, yellow-gold surfaces with pleasing detail on the devices.
