Liberty Double Eagles
1850 $20 AU55 NGC. Original straw-gold coloration adorns this partially lustrous Choice AU example, while the well-detailed design elements exhibit grade-consistent high-point wear. Light chatter appears in the fields, but there are no major abrasions. Although authorized by the same legislation that created the gold dollar in 1849, double eagle coinage was delayed until 1850. Much of the gold used to strike this issue in Philadelphia was shipped from the California gold mines.
