Liberty Double Eagles
1856-S $20 AU58 NGC. CAC. This still-lustrous, reddish-gold Type One twenty was among the nearly 1.2 million double eagles struck in the San Francisco Mint's third year of operation. The coins were manufactured for one purpose: to circulate in Western commerce. High-end coins are very scarce, though they are far more accessible now thanks to the recovery of 1,000 pieces from the S.S. Central America. Scattered marks and a crisp impression characterize each side. NGC has seen 41 finer submissions. CAC: 22 in 58, 12 finer (1/17).
