Liberty Double Eagles
1865 $20 MS63 PCGS. CAC. The 1865 Philadelphia issue remains a scarce Type One twenty in Uncirculated condition despite being one of the significant shipwreck recovery coins in the double eagle series. Virtually all of the Mint State examples trace back to the S.S. Republic treasure. While the exact provenance of the present Select example is unknown, the frosty and lustrous yellow-gold surfaces pleasing orange accents suggest that it, too, is most likely a recovery coin, and a stunning one at that.
The brilliant surfaces display a sharp strike and only a few light obverse abrasions that are of no concern for the given grade. The reverse appears at least a point finer and is virtually unmarked. Cartwheel luster rolls across the vibrant surfaces in waves. To this day, PCGS has graded only a few 1865 double eagles this fine, and CAC endorses the substantial eye appeal and quality surfaces. Population: 10 in 63, 5 finer. CAC: 22 in 63, 24 finer (1/17).
