Liberty Double Eagles
1866 $20 Doubled Motto, FS-801, MS62 PCGS. This variety shows IN positioned high with a boldly repunched N. A production of 698,745 coins in 1866 represented the first batch of double eagles struck with the new motto IN GOD WE TRUST above the eagle on the reverse. The FS-801 variety was created when a small-letter hub was punched into the die over a large-letter hub. The 1866 Liberty Head twenty survives to a sizeable degree in XF to AU grades. All Uncirculated coins are rare, a nice MS62 being about the finest grade even the most well-resourced collectors can hope to obtain, as there are only two finer representatives at the leading certification services.
This frosty peach-gold twenty shows full star centers and typically defined central motifs. Scattered bagmarks appear throughout, and an alloy spot within the lower part of the shield will help identify this coin in future appearances. Population (all varieties): 6 in 62, 2 finer (12/16).
