Liberty Double Eagles
1866-S $20 Motto, Misplaced Date, FS-1301, AU55 NGC. CAC. Small Squat S. The top of an errant 8 appears near the denticles just left of the 1. The San Francisco Mint received the new Type Two double eagle dies later in the year but still managed a production of 842,250 Motto twenties in 1866. This surprisingly lustrous first-year example has the look of a higher-graded piece, but minor friction over the high points limits the grade. Small ticks are peppered across peach and rose-gold surfaces. Only two marks on the cheek merit attention.
