Liberty Double Eagles
1872-CC $20 MS60 PCGS. Variety 1-B. In recent years, we have handled a number of 1872-CC double eagles in XF and AU condition, many with cleaning or other impairments. However, in more than two decades of record-keeping, our Auction Archives list only 11 previous appearances of a Mint State example, all grading MS60 or MS61. Of these, some were reappearances of the same few coins. This rarity is consistent with the certified population ratio of Mint State pieces, which lists combined PCGS and NGC totals of eight MS60s, nine MS61s, and 2 MS62s (one of the MS62s being Star-designated at NGC). As of this writing, the most recent Mint State coin sold in our auctions was an MS61 PCGS coin in our August 2015 ANA Signature sale, lot 4476, which realized $94,000. Our last offering of an MS60 coin was nearly a decade ago in our May 2008 Long Beach Signature sale, lot 3629, where an NGC piece garnered $33,350.
We expect a high degree of interest as the present coin crosses the auction block. The design elements are boldly defined, and the satiny yellow-gold fields offer vibrant luster. Scattered abrasions dictate the grade but collectively pose minimal distraction for the given numeric level.
