Liberty Double Eagles
1883-S $20 MS63 PCGS. The Philadelphia Mint abstained from circulation-strike production of double eagles in 1883, while the Carson City facility struck fewer than 60,000 twenty dollar gold pieces. That leaves the 1883-S, with its mintage of nearly 1.2 million coins, as the only collectible double eagle issue for date collectors. The impression is well-detailed, and grazes are generally shallow. A cartwheel effect is evident on each side of this rose and green-gold Select twenty. PCGS reports 14 higher grading events (1/17).
