Liberty Double Eagles
1884-CC $20 MS61 NGC. CAC. Variety 1-A. This Carson City issue is known for its excellent production quality and relative high-grade availability compared to other contemporary CC double eagles. These attributes make it an ideal option for type purposes. Mike Fuljenz explains in the most recent edition of Type Three Double Eagles, 1877-1907: "The overall level of eye appeal is well above average for a Carson City gold coin of any denomination, making this an especially popular issue." It is that high degree of visual quality that accounts for the green CAC approval sticker. In MS61, the 1884-CC is moderately scarce, while finer coins rarely appear at auction, perhaps once or twice a year. This typically strong and attractive rose-gold twenty is awash in frosty luster. Thin, superficial field grazes determine the grade.
