Liberty Double Eagles
1885-CC $20 AU53 NGC. Variety 1-A. The year 1885 is notoriously challenging for double eagles, as two of the three operating mints saw highly limited production. A total of 751 coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint and 9,450 pieces at the Nevada facility. Only the S-mint coins can be considered collectible. The 1885-CC lays claim to the smallest twenty dollar mintage from the Carson City branch mint from its inception in 1870 until 1891. An average representative of this elusive issue grades fractionally shy of AU50, while examples finer than this piece here are rarely offered.
Full centers are visible on all but stars 1 and 2, and Liberty's hair strands are similarly well-detailed. The faintest trace of friction on the cheek, hair bun, and the eagle's head and wingtips accounts for the grade. Each side is light butter-gold with considerable luster remaining throughout the reverse. Small, wispy abrasions and a few bagmarks are of little import.
