Liberty Double Eagles
1890-CC $20 MS61 NGC. Variety 1-A. The 1890-CC Liberty double eagle claims a mintage of 91,209 pieces, a large production total in the context of the series. Although few examples were saved for numismatic purposes, a number of coins were used to settle accounts in foreign trade and later repatriated. A significant number were found in European holdings as late as the 1990s. Its relative availability in high grade makes the 1890-CC a favorite choice of branch mint type collectors.
The present coin is an attractive Mint State specimen, with sharp definition on the obverse devices. The reverse design elements were strongly impressed, but some definition was lost in the tail feathers, due to lapping. A few short marks on Liberty's cheek and chin probably account for the grade, as the lustrous orange-gold surfaces are lightly marked in other areas. Census: 91 in 61 (1 in 61+), 59 finer (1/17).
