Liberty Double Eagles
1890-CC $20 MS61 PCGS. Variety 1-A. This early die state shows the eagle's tailfeathers complete. Later strikings from this die pair exhibit lapping on the reverse that partially effaces the tailfeathers. This 1890-CC double eagle displays a bold, even strike with semireflective fields and bright yellow-gold patina. Scattered light marks in the fields limit the grade, but there are no individually significant abrasions as are seen on most other coins in this grade. There is no trace of rub, just light chatter on Liberty's cheek. The 1890-CC twenty is seldom seen this attractive in MS61. The date as a whole is scarce in Mint State, and coins grading finer than MS62 are very rare.
