Liberty Double Eagles
1891-CC $20 AU55 NGC. Variety 1-A. The 1891-CC Liberty double eagle claims the second-lowest mintage of the Carson City series, at a meager 5,000 pieces. Accordingly, the 1891-CC is an elusive issue, with most examples seen in the XF-lower AU grade range. In the second edition of his Type Three Double Eagles, Mike Fuljenz notes the 1891-CC has actually become even more difficult to locate over the last decade than it was previously.
The present coin is a pleasing Choice AU specimen, with sharply detailed central design elements that show just a trace of wear on the high points. The lustrous orange-gold surfaces exhibit the expected number of minor surface marks, with a few hints of prooflike reflectivity in sheltered areas. Altogether, a most attractive representative of this popular low-mintage issue.
