Proof Liberty Double Eagles
1904 $20 PR58 PCGS. Light chatter in the mirrored fields on both sides of this gleaming, medium-gold Liberty twenty suggest a brief time in circulation, or possibly careless handling, before the coin was quickly rescued and put aside with proper care. Only 98 proofs were struck of the 1904 double eagle, a select and tiny group compared to the large 6.2-million mintage of circulation strikes. PCGS estimates a mere 55 to 65 proofs survive in all grades. The 1904 is always desirable in proof format with strong demand regardless of the numeric grade. Population: 5 in 58, 43 finer (1/17).
