High Relief Double Eagles
1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim VF35 PCGS. Only when viewing a moderately worn example of the Saint-Gaudens High Relief twenty can one appreciate the depth of the medallic design -- as well as why the original dies were deemed unworkable for mass production. This VF35 representative is smoothly worn but retains its partial wire rim. Likely a pocket piece for much of its time "in circulation," the smoothly worn surfaces have acquired the stream-polished look of an alluvial gold nugget, with glossy-gold fields and deeper orange accents in the crevices of the design. This is a seldom-seen Choice VF example, one of just 20 so-graded pieces at PCGS (12/16).
