High Relief Double Eagles
1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim -- Cleaning -- Genuine PCGS. Unc Details. Charles Barber's career was focused on mechanical efficiency in the production of U.S. coinage. Saint-Gaudens behaved as if he would live forever, sometimes taking 10 or more years on a single monumental commission. The tension between these two men and their approach toward the production of the magnificent High Relief twenties gives us the stuff of great storytelling. The High Relief twenties, as we know them today, were only possible because of the personal intervention by President Theodore Roosevelt. After the sculptor's death in early August 1907, production plans languished until the president insisted on striking the coins. The high relief that was engraved by Saint-Gaudens has endeared these coins to collectors ever since, and has established them as the most beautiful design ever struck. This example has an overall thinning of the mint luster, but shows only the slightest evidence of hairlines. Each side is remarkably free from any obvious contact marks.
