Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles
1925-S $20 MS62 PCGS. Although smaller denomination coinage quickly entered West Coast commerce in the 1920s, most of the double eagle production went into storage at the Treasury only to be melted during the 1933 Gold Recall. The small number of pieces released into circulation make up the bulk of survivors, with Uncirculated pieces scarce-to-rare in all grades. This is a pleasing Mint State representative with rich-gold color and strong frosted luster. An up-and-down strike shows sharpness on the main elements, with some peripheral weakness at the Capitol dome and at UNITED on the reverse. Population: 74 in 62, 121 finer (12/16).
