Territorial Gold
1853 $20 Assay Office Twenty Dollar, 900 Thous. MS63 PCGS. CAC. K-18, R.2. This double eagle predecessor was issued in large quantities under contract with the private firm Curtis, Perry, and Ward, which operated the U.S. Assay Office after the retirement of Moffat in early 1852. Nonetheless, most examples were either lost to attrition or ended up being deposited as bullion at the San Francisco Mint when it became operational in 1854. Most survivors are circulated and show heavy abrasions. Uncirculated pieces are scarce, and rarely is a coin seen finer than MS62. This Select representative displays bright, radiant cartwheel luster and remarkably clean fields. The strike is sharp, and eye appeal is proportionately strong. Finer examples of K-18 are exceedingly rare.
