1877 50C Morgan Head Half Dollar, Judd-1518, Unique, PR63 NGC. The portrait of Liberty is virtually identical to the Morgan dollar, but lesser in scale and surrounded by a beaded circle. Similar to the issued Morgan Dollar, E PLURIBUS UNUM, stars, and the date fill the border. The reverse depicts an eagle with lowered wings perched atop an olive branch and an arrows bundle, superimposed over a shield. The shield is nestled within a laurel wreath, and IN GOD WE TRUST appears on a pleated scroll above. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and HALF DOLLAR complete statutory legends. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. The piece was previously believed to be silver-plated, but it was metallurgically tested and found to be 91.8% silver, 8.1% copper, with a specific gravity of 10.24. Muted golden-brown, aqua, and slate-gray surfaces are smooth except for a few faint obverse hairlines. The pedigree of this unique piece is somewhat confused as it has been thought to be silver-plated at times and has been variously listed as Judd-1519. The following is the expanded pedigree on USPatterns.com:
