Betts-48. 1674 Victory at Martinique. Bronze. MS63 Brown PCGS. This medal commemorates the French victory over the Dutch at the eastern Caribbean island. The obverse portrays a mature King Louis XIV engraved by Mauger. The reverse shows an Indian warrior and Dutch captive at Martinique with an ancient galley in the background below Fame flying overhead. Splendid mahogany and chestnut-brown surfaces exhibit satin luster and hints of faded mint red. 41.1 mm, 29.5 grams. (Est. $1,000-$1,500).
