Betts Medals
Betts-56. 1677 Medal Franco-Dutch War, Tobago, Silver, MS62 PCGS. The Dutch Republic regained control of Tobago in 1674 with the Second Treaty of Westminster. Fort Sterreschans was built by the Dutch, and repelled French naval attacks in February and March 1677. On December 6, 1677, a fleet led by French admiral Count d'Estrées destroyed the settlement and killed the Dutch leader, Jacob Binckes, ending Dutch attempts to settle the island. This rare silver medal commemorates the French victory. Betts translates the reverse legend as "the fleet of the Dutch burned at Tobago." Sharply struck and satiny with lightly marked silver-gray and caramel-gold surfaces. (Est. $4,000-$6,000).
