Betts-66. 1687 Christopher Lord Albemarle. Silver -- Cleaning -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. The obverse is signed GB for George Bower (or Bauer), featuring a richly clad Duke of Albermarle, the Governor General of Jamaica who was named to that position in 1687. He died in office the following year. The reverse depicts the sea god Neptune with trident, reclining on an urn, watching Sir William Phipps' salvage ships on the horizon preparing to raise treasure on Silver Shoals that will bring the duke £90,000 before his death. This example was cleaned, likely before it was deaccessioned from the Glebow Museum. Once mounted with abraded surfaces and minor rim problems. An extremely rare and highly important medal. 46.4 mm, 40.8 grams. (Est. $8,000-$10,000).
