Betts Medals
Betts-97. 1702 American Treasure Captured at Vigo Bay. Silver. MS62 PCGS. A crowned bust of Queen Anne facing left by John Croker, a lovelock across the shoulder. The crown points to R in FRA. The reverse presents a cloud sailing gracefully above a wonderfully detailed bird's eye view of the narrow-mouth harbor with Anglo-Dutch vessels bottling up the burning Spanish and French ships in the inner port. Small ship atop the allied flotilla is covered by the tall mast of the larger ship below. The Latin legend hails the French and Spanish fleet captured or burned. Splendid original pewter-gray surfaces exhibit champagne and pale blue overtones. 37.2 mm 17.7 grams. (Est. $1,500-$2,000).
