Betts Medals
Betts-572. 1780 Treaty of Armed Neutrality. Silver. MS63 PCGS. Reverse signed by Adriaan Van Baerll, an engraver in Holland. The text on the obverse translates as, "Armed Neutrality." Various designs represent Russia, Great Britain, Sweden, Denmark, and Holland. According to Betts, the reverse text means, "Jehovah, the Avenger of Treaties, confirms Catharine's Treaty of assistance, so that the commerce of the neutral powers remains intact for the benefit of their people." An all-seeing eye with rays appears. Areas of luster remain on this piece displaying rich toning in hues of golden-copper, blue-green, red, and turquoise. The toning on the obverse is particularly appealing. 31.6 mm, 12.2 grams. (Est. $1,000-$1,500).
Ex: John J. Ford, Jr. (Stack's, 5/2006), lot 229. Possibly from the Medina Collection.
