U.S. Mint Medals
"1781" Lieutenant Colonel John Egar Howard Military Medal, Betts-595, Julian MI-9, MS64 Brown Uncertified. The original Cowpens medal was struck at the Paris Mint, and they also produced restrikes. Later U.S. Mint strikes have textured fields from "Gunmetal Dies" that were hubbed from a Paris Mint example of the medal. However, this medal was struck before replacement dies were created at the Philadelphia Mint in 1881. No die cracks are evident on this early U.S. Mint production. This splendid example exhibits lovely walnut-brown surfaces with traces of faded mint red and delicate blue overtones. 45 mm, 57.4 grams. (Est. $1,000-$1,500).
