U.S. Mint Medals
(1849) Maj. Gen. Zachary Taylor, Julian MI-24, Bronzed Copper, MS63 Brown NGC. Major General Zachary Taylor was victorious in the Mexican-American War, and the U.S. Congress voted to award him medals for the battles of Palo Alto, Monterey, and Buena Vista. The first two medals (Julian-MI-22 and 23) were criticized for their lack of a battle scene, and for a unsuitably downcast portrait of Taylor. Taylor was elected President in 1848, and New York engraver Charles Cushing Wright was commissioned to engrave the dies for the large (90 mm) Buena Vista medal, based on appropriately heroic designs by Salathiel Ellis and Frederic Augustus Smith. The present walnut-brown example is unabraded, and is well struck aside from slight blending on the hair above the ear. A pair of unobtrusive spots are noted on the upper reverse. 90 mm. (Est. $1,500-$2,000)
