U.S. Mint Medals
1836 Medal First Steam Coinage, Feb. 22, Julian MT-20, Bronzed Copper -- Environmental Damage -- PCGS Genuine. Unc. Details. Julian writes, "The original ceremony for the first steam coinage had been scheduled for Washington's birthday, February 22 ... Dies were prepared well in advanced and samples struck but some mechanical problems forced postponement until March 23." The reverse die was modified to the Mar. 23 date, and that variety (Julian MT-21) is merely scarce. But medals bearing the Feb. 22 date are very rare. An olive-brown example with minor pitting and a few hair-thin marks on the reverse. 27 mm. (Est. $1,000-$1,500).
