So-Called Dollars
1896 Bryan Dollar, Tiffany & Co., Original, AU50 PCGS. Zerbe-1, HK-777, Schornstein-1. Silver, 49 mm, plain edge. The very first Bryan money variety listed in the Schornstein standard reference. S-1 is part of the educational series. The uniface design consists of legends that compare the bullion value of a Federal gold dollar with its much larger silver equivalent. Rare originals made in 1896 exhibit TIFFANY & CO in 7 1/2 mm letters on the edge near 6 o'clock. Scarce 1910 restrikes, made by the same firm, show a similar edge marking with 8 mm letters. A third variety, S-2, exists with 13 1/2 mm letters for the edge marking, and is considered rare. The present S-1 example exhibits lightly abraded silver-gray and wheat-gold surfaces. (Est. $700-$1,000).
