Hard Times Tokens
1837 R.E. Russell, 12 1/2 C., AU58 NGC. Low-128, HT-309, R.5. Dr. Feuchtwanger presumably struck this one-bit token variety on behalf of New York merchant R.E. Russell, since the alloy is German silver, and the obverse die is common to Breen-6 HT-268 Feuchtwanger cents. While the Feuchtwanger cents are fairly common, the R.E. Russell token is seldom encountered. A smooth stone-gray example with light wear on the snake and eagle's breast.
