Civil War Merchants
(1861-1865) Stoner & Shroyer, Adamsville, OH, MS65 NGC. DeWitt-USG-1868-39A, Fuld-NC-OH-AA-5b. Ex: John J. Ford, Jr. Brass, 18 mm, R.9. Dry good merchants L.D. Stoner and Solomon Shroyer were the only issuers of Civil War tokens in the small town of Adamsville, Ohio. The merchant die survived the war and was eventually muled with dies made by Key & Co. of Philadelphia, such as an 1868 U.S. Grant campaign medal. This die pair was listed in the first two editions of Fuld as Fuld-OH5A-5b but is now acknowledged as a post-Civil War variety. A mark-free example with a wheat-gold obverse and a dusky peach-gold reverse. (Est. $700-$1,000).
Ex: John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part 23, (Stack's-Bowers, 8/2013), lot 21580, which realized $881.25.
