20th Century Tokens and Medals
1927 New Monte Cristo Mining Company, C.C. Julian, MS63 NGC. Ex: Weber Collection. Sterling silver, octagonal, 42 mm. ALLEN on edge, per NGC holder. C.C. Julian, a con artist active during the 1920s, issued this medal to commemorate the opening of the New Monte Cristo Mine near Wickenburg, Arizona. Julian was majority shareholder of the Julian Petroleum Company, shares of which were extensively promoted in print media by Julian. To fend off California regulators, Julian purchased existing mines, including the New Monte Cristo, but its operations were soon shut down by the California State Corporation Commission. This satiny example displays even steel-gray toning. The high points display minor blending, and the fields show only minor contact. (Est. $1,000-$1,500).
