Seated Half Dollars
1861-O 50C WB-101, Die Pair 6, R.3, MS63 PCGS. The obverse die was used by both the State of Louisiana and the Confederacy. The present example is struck from the first use of the obverse die showing strong dentils, paired with a reverse that displays a small defect on the upright of the R in AMERICA. Later uses of the obverse develop weak dentils beneath the date and a die crack from stars 9 to 13. Richly toned in umber-gray and sea-green shades with reddish-gold highlights, the attractive surfaces are smooth and lustrous with only a few minor marks. The strike is quite sharp on both sides, benefiting from the fresh dies.
