Seated Half Dollars
1861-O 50C CSA Obverse, WB-102, Die Pair 11, R.3, FS-401, XF45 PCGS. After a brief period of operations in 1861 under Union authority, the New Orleans Mint transitioned to control by the State of Louisiana, and eventually operated under the authority of the Confederacy. Most of the 1861-O half dollars were struck under either Louisiana or Confederate authority. Seven varieties are considered CSA half dollars, but only the current variety (W-11) utilizes the same obverse that was later paired with the famous Confederate reverse (W-12). The iconic die crack from the edge to the right of star 7 to the bridge of Liberty's nose, chin, and shoulder is the most notable feature of the obverse die, as well as a date that slants sharply upward. This Choice XF example displays a strong die crack and appealing dappled-gray toning. Traces of silver luster remain at the margins.
