Seated Half Dollars
1861-O 50C C.S.A. Issue, WB-103/104, Bisected Date, Speared Olive Bud, Die Pair 14, R-4 -- Shipwreck Effect (B) -- NGC Details. Unc. Ex: S.S. Republic. The salvage and conservation efforts were well-rewarded by this example, struck from a scarce C.S.A. die pair. The distinctive variety was struck at the New Orleans Mint while it was operated by the Confederacy. The "Bisected Date" refers to a vertical crack through the left border of the 6. The "Speared Olive Bud" shows parallel die lines through the upper olive bud on the reverse. Brilliant with a few areas of white cloudiness, this softly lustrous shipwreck survivor shows the expected finely granular surfaces with Uncirculated definition and a remarkably sharp strike.
