Early Dollars
1800 $1 B-3, BB-183, R.5, VF35 NGC. Bowers-Borckardt Die State I. The R in LIBERTY is doubled and the leaf touches the lower stand of I in AMERICA, identifying the rare BB-183 variety. The BB-183 has a surviving population of 40-70 examples in all grades and was considered one of the rarest varieties of the Draped Bust series by early numismatists. A few more coins surfaced over the years, as attributing early dollar varieties became more popular. This Choice VF specimen offers pleasing lavender-gray surfaces, with slate-gray highlights. Most interior detail on the devices remains intact.
