(1850-1866) P$20 Type One Double Eagle, Reverse Die Trial, Copper AU50 NGC. The regular issue reverse die of the Type One double eagle, uniface, struck in copper with a plain edge. A number of die trials for double eagles are recorded in the Pollock reference, in the Judd pattern book, and in Don Taxay's coinage encyclopedia. However, none of those listings match this piece. Likely unique and one of the highly important offerings from the Newman Collection. Unevenly struck on a copper planchet that weights 201.5 grains, with a specific gravity of about 9.0, this piece shows strong details above the horizontal axis and weak details below that reference line. The planchet is uneven and out of round, and the blank back of this piece has an extra arc line apparently from a planchet cutter, ruling out the possibility of a complete copper pattern with the back ground down.
