Gold Dollars
1853-D G$1 AU58 NGC. Variety 5-G. A semiprooflike example with radiant and smooth honey-gold surfaces. The strike is sharp for the Dahlonega facility, especially on Liberty's hair. A vast majority of 1853-D gold dollars exhibit normal coin turn, but a few, such as the present piece, were struck from widely rotated dies. They were likely among the first struck for the issue, since prominent die lines are apparent on both sides, such as below Liberty's chin. The coiner apparently soon noticed the error, stopped the press, and secured the loose die.
