Liberty Quarter Eagles
1858-C $2 1/2 AU55 NGC. Variety 1. Even though only 9,056 pieces were struck, the 1858-C is the most frequently encountered Charlotte quarter eagle from the decade of the 1850s. Doug Winter believes a small hoard was released sometime in the 1980s, thus accounting for the increased availability. The surfaces on this example are more yellow-gold in color with traces of mint luster remaining. The "deep, distracting marks" mentioned by Doug are evident on this piece. The most obvious are three parallel diagonal depressions on the reverse of unknown origin.
