Liberty Quarter Eagles
1861-S $2 1/2 AU55 NGC. The 1861-S quarter eagle claims only about 85 survivors in all grades, making this Choice About Uncirculated example a largely unrecognized condition rarity. Mint luster remains strong across both sides, while the strike is sharp except on the eagle, which always comes weak for the issue. Just 24,000 pieces were struck, and virtually all succumbed to rigorous circulation in the Old West. Census: 12 in 55, 27 finer (12/16).
