Indian Quarter Eagles
1911-D $2 1/2 Weak D AU55 NGC. Bright yellow-gold color with slight, even wear over each side. With the physical description out of the way, on to what everyone will want to know: Where is the D? It actually is there, but this is admittedly the faintest D we have seen. A strong magnifier will be needed. The D is tilted. It is roughly defined by two very shallow marks at top and bottom. Now angle the coin slightly toward you so much of the reverse is in shadows. The tilted D should appear when there is very little light left in that area. See it? If not, the obverse does show the diagnostic wire rim around the right margin, and on this piece it is unusually wide. A coin not for the faint of heart, but it really is a 1911-D. Note: The enlargement took two weeks of on-off-again frustration by our photographer (Thanks, Travis). The D has had some black added to the image to show its location. It will NOT look like this in-person.
