Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1861 $3 AU53 PCGS. The Mint suspended specie payments toward the end of 1861 as a result of widespread hoarding of precious-metal coinage that began with the opening of the Civil War. This low-mintage 1861 three dollar gold piece apparently circulated for a short-time before it was pulled from circulation, but the pleasing orange-gold surfaces show only minor abrasions and retain a few traces of original mint luster.
