Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1863 $3 AU53 NGC. Ex: Suwannee River Collection. A pale gold example struck during the midst of the Civil War from a modest mintage of just 5,000 pieces. The Bowers reference suggests the 1863 three dollar pieces were not deliberately saved and "across the board they are quite rare." This example displays double die clashing in each side and only tiny marks from circulation. Traces of luster linger in protected areas.
