Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1878 $3 MS64 PCGS. Minted in large quantity to provide gold coins for exchange -- at par -- for paper currency, demand by the public never materialized and the three dollar gold denomination remained as unpopular as ever. The 1878 is one of the few dates in the long-running series that is somewhat available in a range of Mint State grades. This Choice Uncirculated example is especially appealing with lilac and orange accents over mostly prooflike, minimally marked surfaces. A terrific type representative from the penultimate year of the series.
