Liberty Half Eagles
1839-D $5 -- Improperly Cleaned -- NGC Details. XF. Variety 2-A. The first Liberty half eagle issue from the Dahlonega Mint was also the last such issue with an obverse mintmark. An underappreciated single-year design subtype with a different portrait of Liberty. This apricot-gold example has a somewhat subdued appearance, but the only mentionable mark is a slight rim knock east of the date. The eagle's wings are well defined, though the curls near the ear are lightly brought up.
