Liberty Eagles
1839 $10 Type of 1840, Small Letters VF25 NGC. Mid-way through 1839, the Mint modified Christian Gobrecht's Liberty Head design. Earlier coins show a more rounded bust with a pointed tip, and a sweeping hairstyle. The modified portrait coins represent about one third of the ten dollar gold pieces struck that year and are about four times as rare as the Type of 1838 coins. From a mintage of 12,447 pieces, roughly 50 to 60 survive. This well-circulated survivor has deep orange-gold coloration. Marks are generally minor with only two noteworthy digs between stars 5 and 6. Census: 2 in 25, 33 finer (12/16).
