Liberty Double Eagles
1859-S $20 AU50 PCGS. From a mintage of 636,445 pieces, the 1859-S Liberty double eagle is a popular Type One issue, easily acquired in lower circulated grades, but seldom seen in Mint State. Of the 67 examples recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Republic, only one coin achieved a Mint State grade. This attractive AU specimen is lightly worn and lightly abraded, and the orange-gold surfaces retain traces of original mint luster.
