Liberty Double Eagles
1861-S $20 AU53 NGC. The year 1861 is significant in the double eagle series. Perhaps best known are the highly desirable Paquet Reverse types struck at the Philadelphia and San Francisco mints. There is also the fact that the Philadelphia Mint production of nearly 3 million pieces would stand as the highest twenty dollar mintage until 1904. In this context, the 1861-S often gets forgotten, but it is scarce in About Uncirculated condition and very rare in Mint State. This lightly circulated, partly lustrous AU53 representative maintains good design detail. Myriad marks are to be expected.
