Liberty Double Eagles
1871 $20 AU53 NGC. The individual strands of Liberty's hair are largely indistinct, but the star radials and eagle's feathers retain strong detail despite a hint of friction. Lively luster glitters from lightly abraded straw-gold surfaces. The Mint reduced double eagle output by a substantial amount in 1871, dropping to 80,120 pieces. That would stand as the lowest P-mint production until 1880. A scarce Type Two issue.
