Territorial Gold
1850-Dated California Gold Mines Token MS62 NGC. K-1, Low R.7. Gilt copper, reeded edge. The design does not indicate a denomination, but the diameter is similar to a double eagle, and Don Kagin (page 373 of his classic reference) lists it as a $20 piece. He adds, "probably engraved by William Lemme of San Francisco. All known pieces are gold plated." We have auctioned very few examples; a corroded Good Details piece realized $977.50 as lot 5976 in our January 2009 FUN Signature. Satiny and unworn with minimal marks and an intricate strike.
