THESSALY, Gonnos. Mid-late 4th century BC. Æ Dichalkon (17mm, 5.64 g, 12h). Head of nymph right, wearing earring / ΓΟΝΝE-OΝ, lion standing right. Rogers 226 corr. (lower part of ethnic not noted); BCD Thessaly II 76.2 corr. (ethnic ends ON, not ΩN); HGC 4, 162. VF, dark green patina.

From the BCD Collection.

A note from BCD from the Triton sale: One may assume that the lions were a threat to the sheep population at Gonnos and having one on the coins would be a useful reminder for the shepherds to watch out for them and at the same time an attempt to exorcise them.
